Lifeguard Training Course Register View Cart

PLEASE SEE THIS FLYER FOR A LOCAL COURSE OFFERING!

This class certifies successful participants in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding with CPR/AED For the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Waterfront Skills.

Age Requirement:
Participants getting certified as a lifeguard for the first time must be at least 15 years of age on or before the final class date.  A copy of your birth certificate will be required for proof of age. Participants re-certifying as a lifeguard must be at least 16 years of age. 

Prerequisites:
On the first day of this course, participants will need to display the following skills in order to continue in the class. Approval by the instructor is for the safety of all parties. 

Skill 1: 200 yd swim-tread-swim sequence for Lifeguard Training or a 550 yd swim for the Waterfront Skills (goggles permitted). 
  • 150/350 yard swim demonstrating either Front crawl or Breaststroke
  • immediately position oneself vertically in the water and tread for 2 minutes
  • 50/200 yard swim either Front Crawl or Breaststroke or a combination of both
Skill 2: Timed -Event (goggles NOT permitted)
  • 20 yard swim
  • surface dive, retrieve object, return to surface
  • 20 yard swim back with object using legs only; hands must remain on the object; face must be at or near the surface
  • exit the water without a ladder or steps       
Skill 3: (Waterfront candidates only) 20 yard underwater swim
  • swim 5 yards with face in or out of the water
  • submerge, swim underwater and retrieve three dive rings
  • return to the surface holding all three dive rings and continue to swim for 5 yards
What to Bring:
Please bring a bathing suit, towel, snacks/lunch, drinks, and warm clothing to coverup with if desired. We will supply you with a pocket-mask and waist-belt.

Attendance:

Attendance at ALL classes is mandatory in order to pass the course.

Eligibility for Course Fee Reimbursement:
Successful Lifeguard candidates that are employed by the Queensbury Recreation Department will have course fees refunded at the conclusion of a full summer season of employment. Candidates must work late June through Labor Day (exclusions apply).

  • Minimum of 6 participants required
  • Once enrolled, participants will be sent a letter and email with the directions on how to access the online portion of the course through the American Red Cross Direct Link website.
  • Successful completion of the Pre-Course In-Water Skills is required. DO NOT enroll if you CANNOT complete the pre- course requirements above. The available Lifeguard Training Preparation Course prior to the pre-course is highly recommended!
